Greece is a Mediterranean country with a high level of sunshine and mild weather conditions, a fact that favors the promotion and construction of bioclimatic residences. A bioclimatic residence can save up to 30% energy compared to a conventional residence and up to 80% to an old building resulting in a significant environmental benefit.

The location of the rooms of the bioclimatic house is the most significant in the effort of saving up energy. The area of the kitchen and the dining room must be located on the eastern side of the residence to take advantage of the benefits of solar energy in the early morning hours. The bedrooms must be located on the northern side of the residence to collect all the thermal energy of the sun in the afternoon hours. All the other spaces like the stairs, the hallways, and the storage rooms, are located on the northern side. Also, as regards the location of the windows on the north side and small windows on the south side.

Airing

It is connected to the heating and the air conditioning of the spaces; therefore, a correct airing system removes the pollutants and the humidity resulting in saving energy. The design plays an important role due to the fact that the properly designed openings achieve air renewal.

Lighting

With the best natural light utilization which enters the indoor spaces, electric power is greatly saved and better living quality in the house is achieved. The quality and the propagation of light depend on the openings in the spaces, the material of the surfaces, and the shape of the space.

Insulation

The cost of a bioclimatic building is higher than the cost of a conventional one, but the benefits are multiple in the long term. The choice of the materials aims to the thermal capture and to the reduction of the thermal losses which is achieved with mass walls and thermal storage walls.
